Description

This vintage Stanley #40 scrub plane pattern maker's kit comes with 6 of the early V-logo blades and 7 wooden shoes, all housed in a vintage hand-crafted custom wood storage box. The plane was modified by the original owner, assumed to be a pattern maker, who drilled and tapped the sole in order to attach a 5/8" wide x 2" long steel dovetail to the bottom of the plane. The hardwood shoes all have a matching slot that accepts the dovetail and will slide back onto it to lock the shoe to the bottom of the sole. The cutting blade would then be adjusted to project through the wooden mouth opening and secure the entire assembly together. The hardwood shoes are rounded on the side opposite the slots and are marked using roman numerals, in order of increasing radius, "II R, II1/2 R, III R, IV R, V R and VI R." The seventh shoe is marked 20" R. The cutting blades all have the accompanying radii and marks stamped into them with a punch. NOTE: You will receive what is shown in the photos. Missing from the kit, and therefor not included in this sale, is the plane's cap, cap thumb screw and the number "4" blade. Condition: the plane and blades got wet at some point causing the pitting visible in the photos on the bottom of the plane's sole mainly aft of the dovetail and some surface rust elsewhere on the plane where the japanning is missing. The blades have varying amounts of surface rust but I believe they would clean up nicely with some polishing which I did not attempt to do. The wooden storage case has one broken hinge and is missing one side of its wooden sides but I would attach a replacement made from veneer prior to shipping and the case does do a nice job holding all of the parts together. Perfect for collectors and carpentry enthusiasts, this kit is a rare find. Don't miss out on the opportunity to own this unique piece of history.
