Description
Based on photo research, this is a hand carved statue of a camel for a nativity scene. This is a typical souvenir from the holy land or Middle East. Based on the wood grain, it's most likely carved from olive wood, but I can't be sure. I don't know where he was made, nor the age. His hanging basket appears to be machine carved and glued on. His leather-like black straps are glued. His chain is nailed with tiny nails. His feet appear to be ripped from a glued cardboard base. Raw wood finish really shows the beautiful grain of olive wood. He is about 5 inches / 12.5 mm tall at the tip of his nose, about 4 inches long, and about 2 inches wide. And he is a male camel because he was carved somewhat anatomically correct. :) Condition note: the pinkish mark in photo #2 is a sticker that I removed, which resulted in a lighter wood color in photo #6. Please see my other listings. I inherited a nativity set that was complete except Mary was lost. They all seem to go together based on patina, style, and size. But they are not close enough to say they are a set so I split them up. The camel was included in the set but because if his raw wood finish, he doesn't belong to any nativity set. These camels are typically souvenirs that are bought for decor and he is too small to be ridden by any of the wise men I received. Thank you for looking and please feel free to ask questions. These nativity pieces are small and hard to photograph but absolutely charming.
